7th July – 18th August “Back Beside the Seaside’ is a summer roadshow and touring exhibition by The Fedora Group in association with Littlehampton Museum and inspired by its McGill collection.
McGill and his comic postcards (saucy and otherwise) are forever linked in the popular imagination with the Great British seaside holiday and his talents were lauded by admirers as diverse as George Orwell and comic actor Ronnie Barker. Playwright Dennis Potter dubbed him ‘The Picasso of The Pier’.
Our display will include additional scenic and comic postcards of Brighton.
On six Sundays on the Piazza near the West Pier starting on July 24th, the linked roadshow will present a season of seafront entertainers whose work reflects novelties pictured on postcards from the past.
Glyn Edwards, the Trust’s education partner, has created interpretation strands about the Pier for children to access via a touchscreen during the run of the exhibition. The project acknowledges the support of Arts Council England.
