The next exhibition at the West Pier Centre is Contemporary Pier Posters by Nicky Thompson, which will also include a new image of the West Pier especially created for this exhibition.
Nicky is a graphic designer, illustrator, lecturer and occasional fine artist and since 1994 he has owned and managed design studio, Lemondrop Creative. He has exhibited widely in the UK, not only in conventional museum and gallery spaces, but also cathedrals, stately homes, National Trust Parkland and across the rail network. He describes his preferred gallery space as “the humble station platform which of course is the natural habitat for my artworks.”
The original collection of 12 posters that will be on show was commissioned by the National Piers Society to mark the Year of the Pier 2023. They first went on display at the Society’s AGM this summer and feature the Palace Pier, Eastbourne Pier, Worthing Pier, Bangor Garth Pier, St. Annes Pier, Llandudno Pier, Cromer Pier, Clevedon Pier, Southend Pier, Weston-Super-Mare Pier; Saltburn Pier and Blackpool North Pier.
“In recent years I’ve been doing a lot of vintage travel-style posters that really took off in 2017 when the BBC did a little piece on me,” he said. “I’ve done work for various rail companies who wanted campaigns in a vintage, art deco style. The Pier Society set is the most recent, and I’m currently working on a set for London Zoo as well as a West Pier image especially for the exhibition at the West Pier Centre”
